Default Sign, sign everywhere a sign except at Carpenter Farm Supply

As inidicated in my letter to the Cary News , I think it's a shame that the Carpenter Farm Supply sign is to be torn down. Although the sign is relatively modern and lacking any formal historic designation, some of us feel it contributes to the character of the Carpenter Historic District (a pole sign of some form has stood at this location for about as long as the store has been there...90 years or so).

In fact, my front yard has this:

It's especially galling that at the same time Staff is sending out letters to private business owners to tear down their pole signs or incur fines, government is putting up its own pole signs.

Some have compared the taxpayer-financed signs to Hampton Inn signs. That being the case, don't be surprised if you see something like this on the new pole signs from your friends in Cary government:

... And why are all the "yard signs" for new housing sales going up and standing in groups of 12 to 15 at an intersection, but campaign signs (which are of the same general size and type - a sign on a stick) have to meet regulations, to include being down within a certain timeframe. These things are an increasing blight, and seem to have no visble evidence of coming to a halt in our lifetimes.

It seems that there is no attempt to apply these rules, because the builders and developers need to push all the homes they build, and the agenda to stop posting them just isn't there. So they go after the Carpenter Hardware store sign, because it's easy prey.

Oh, and by the way, there was a request by guess who, our very own Jeff Ulma at the request of Raleigh Regional Association of Realtor (RRAR), (9/22/2004 CTC meeting) to change the signage requirements to be less restrictive for realtors so they could plaster the landscape with their permanent campaign signs. Guess who's responsible for enforcement... right again, Town Staff...signs aren't supposed to be in any highway medians, or interfere in any way. Guess what, they're everywhere!

As of tomorrow, the Carpenter Farm Supply sign (and all other pole signs in Cary) are supposed to be removed.

Except for the butt-ugly ones put up by town government. Town government doesn't have to follow its own laws.

And staff resists any suggestions to rectify this situation.

And council declines to offer any adult supervision.

    What a shame.

    Brent,

You're right. It is a shame.
Does this feel like "local control" of development decisions to you?

And it's a real shame that the hypocrisy ends up being an ongoing embarrasment to the citizens of the Town.

And it's a shame that there aren't more citizens paying enough attention to the "problems" to do something about it at the polls.

Too many just vote on name recognition and pat themselves on the back for a job well done "cuz they voted". Then they get angry at anyone who criticizes what the Town does in their name.

    Well said, Cathy.

If only enough citizens would pay attention and get involved, we could accomplish the housecleaning at town hall that is so sorely needed.

For now, though, it appears that that apathetic citizenry will continue to allow the pathetic status quo.

Maybe the Carpenter Farm Supply Store should declare itself to be a developers group, then they would be able to blight the whole town with as much signage as they want!

All so the developers can put at least 24 houses on a one acre plot, and then tell us we're going to have to connect to their sewer system, God help us if we were to keep our septic systems.....

This issue was covered in a story on FOX-50/WRAL. Here's the online version: http://www.wral.com/news/9457562/detail.html

Excerpts from the story showing staff hypocrisy in action:

“Citizens enjoy Cary because of the aesthetics,” said Cary sssociate [sic] planning director Ricky Barker. “Another step towards improving aesthetics is removing the pole signs.”

In the next breath, Hypocrite Ricky says, of the government's pole signs that are going up at the same time they're forcing private ones down:

“(It’s) our 21st century model, to help provide safety information and traffic flow information,” said Barker. “It provides a great public service.”

You don't even need the CP translation service for this. All pole signs must go because pole signs are ugly. Government's pole signs provide a public service, so they're OK. (I guess that providing a public service somehow masks being butt-ugly or that ugliness somehow applies only to signs paid for by private dollars rather than my tax money).

How do Hypocrite Ricky and his bosses sleep at night? Why is no one on council providing some leadership in the form of adult supervision to out-of-control staff?

Anyone want to join me in a good old-fashioned protest outside town hall?

Halloween isn't that far off, anybody want to join me in putting up a nice large, not easily missed "FOR SALE" sign in the lawn of the Town of Cary office complex?

Brent, I will join you in spirit at the protest . After all, it looks like your in a war zone too!.

As to adult supervision, I find it more like a puppet show. Problem is, those who pull the strings are well hidden behind the curtain.

Ricky Barker is the spokeperson for annexation too...and on this issue, just like annexation, you seldom hear that his direction comes from the people elected to run Cary. Unfortunately, the hard truth is that this is what voter apathy brings...

    Rono
Fear, are you STILL being manipulated by it?
